Fall-an end and a beginning
“October!” “Where did the summer go?” It seems these words follow every greeting not only among friends but also when walking into a store, a restaurant, and other establishments.
There is something about the onset of fall that feels like an end and a beginning. The crisp air, the earlier sunsets, the vibrant leaves on trees before they begin to drop off their branches are all strong signals of the change taking place. It is such a natural occurrence. If we take the time to think about the ease with which this happens, we can remind ourselves that we can learn from this natural act. I am reminded of all the times I found the strength to begin again.
Of course, we don’t even think about the leaves returning to the trees. Their beginning in the spring is certain. For most of us a new beginning is not as clear. Especially if it comes after a loss or adversity.
As I reflect on the many challenges I faced as a young orphan child, there were times when I didn’t know what the next stage would bring. Emigrating to a new country, learning a new language, attaining the career I desired, and living the “American Dream.” I found the strength with each beginning to pursue what I considered were wholesome and good goals without knowing I would reach the desired outcome. I just knew I needed to take the steps necessary to go forward. I drew on the belief in myself and my faith that I could. When I think of some situations, I am surprised at the boldness I displayed in pursuing my goals. Was it boldness? Or was I listening to my inner voice urging me to go on?
So, I believe when we begin something it’s not from scratch, but we have our insights and resilience from our past. We can say just as the fallen leaves enrich the soil, our past experiences support and propel us forward. We can embrace new beginnings with courage. Be brave and willing to go out of our comfort zone. That doesn’t mean it has to be something big which feels overwhelming. We can begin with something like making a simple decision. Such as picking up a pen and writing two lines in a journal, going for a ten-minute walk, trusting again, one act of kindness a day.
As I anticipate the full color explosion of the season, knowing that the trees are not attempting to hold on to their leaves. And just as they are patient until it’s time for them to return, perhaps we too can pause and be patient for our next beginning.
If you have something you’ve been wanting and have put it on hold, I hope this season you will take steps toward that goal or dream. Even if it’s just taking a minute or two a day to be with yourself. Enjoy the moment and each day—just begin.

In closing, just as the trees shed their leaves trusting that in the spring, they will return—let us begin this season by trusting that what’s blooming ahead for us is for our highest good.
