Christmas Decorating
When is the right time to decorate for Christmas? It seems every year the retail stores begin earlier.
I recall in the past we New Englanders followed a sequence for holiday decorating. The cool October temperatures ushered the spectacular foliage colors. Local farms attracted crowds to their corn mazes and pumpkin displays. Children and adults delighted in carving, decorating, and displaying their creations outside their homes. Scare crows and skeletons joined the pumpkin decor to prepare for Halloween.
At the end of October we removed the witches, scare crows and their friends to prepare for Thanksgiving. Chrysanthemum plants joined the pumpkins and conversations centered on Thanksgiving celebrations. “Where are you spending Thanksgiving?” or “Are the kids coming for the holiday?” Discussions about the menu included family pie and stuffing recipes.
Every year the day after Thanksgiving, I join the early Christmas decorators—I replace our dishes, glassware, serving pieces, and linens to their Christmas counterparts. After a week, our home turns into a magical Christmas wonderland.
September 2022, my grandson, and I were shocked and a disappointed to see Macy’s Christmas shop all set up. The trees had not turned their colors. Halloween was more than a month away, and never mind about Thanksgiving.
How do you feel about the Christmas displays in the stores in early fall?
