Fun and emotional activities filled my schedule in August. At the top of the list is my sister Lena’s visit. The cell parking lot at Logan International Airport, conveniently located across from the international arrivals terminal, was a display of excitement. The signs demanded that vehicles must be attended to avoid a tow. Several trunks were open, ready to receive the luggage of loved ones. Children’s voices, laughter, and cries gave a semblance of a playground as parents entertained their little ones. Charles and I took turns going inside the terminal. When I was with the vehicle, my eyes darted around the parking lot. I loved seeing the variety of greetings: long-lasting hugs, light kisses on a cheek, kisses on both cheeks, and when it appeared a passionate kiss was eminent, I looked away to allow privacy.
Finally, two hours after the flight’s arrival, with uncontained anticipation I was the one to spot Lena’s smiling face emerge from the Custom’s doorway. It was the beginning of an exciting three weeks.
I had not realized that Lena’s visit would be received with the same excitement and pleasure as ours by our friends, acquaintances, and strangers. She attended one of my book club appearances and dazzled the attendees who had read Taxi to America. The lively discussion, positive comments, and Q&A paired with their warm welcome was an emotional and rewarding evening for all.
When the host of KnightSide, Dan Rea interviewed me, Lena was all ready to listen to the interview live. She set herself up in a nearby room, with her iPad streaming WBZ1030 radio.

Aside from all the excitement surrounding my book and my sister’s first visit since its publication, there was a significant occurrence for us. It was the first time in our lives that we celebrated one of our birthdays together. This may not seem like a big deal to the average person, but for the two of us, it was. Lena, as is a custom in Greece, treated our family to a dinner out for her 74th birthday.
It was more than sisters getting together. As we know, family relationships are rooted in the values, experiences, and caring we share. The love and trust we have and the knowing that we are there for each other, no matter what. And so it is with every reunion with Lena and me, a confirmation of that bond we have, despite the challenges we endured and overcame. A powerful reminder that love and understanding sustain our bonds.
