Happy New Month
As you know by now, I was born in Greece and lived there until I was eleven years old. Although I emigrated to the United States, I kept close ties with my first country and have been visiting there at least once a year. It makes sense that I have held on to several cultural traditions.
One of those being the tradition of a set greeting for the first day of every month and for the first day of every week. Monday of every week.
It is customary on the first day of the new month to wish everyone you meet or with everyone you communicate “Happy New Month” the literal translation is “good month.” Conversely on the first day of the week which in Greece it is Monday “good week”. Everyone you meet, whether you know the person, after the greeting of the day; good morning, good evening, etc. you follow with good week or good month.
I love this custom, and I continue to practice it. As a matter of fact, I use it on social media posts. I feel the urge to wish everyone a good beginning, whether it is the week or the month. I get a response from non-Greek friends who wish me back the same. Who knows it may become a custom outside my Greek circle.
And so, in keeping with the spirit of my Greek culture, I wish you a good month. This month I am adding to the wish; health, joy, and happiness for the Holiday Season.
