Happy New Year.

Best wishes to you and yours for 2023. I hope all of us will have many exciting moments as these two cuties are exhibiting. Sophia and Emmet, our goddaughter’s children, couldn’t wait for the new year.

In the Greek tradition, the head of the household cuts a vasilopita which has a coin or a small trinket in it. She or he cuts a slice for God and/or the house, family members, whether or not present. After the pieces have been cut, he or she hands them out from the eldest to the youngest. According to the tradition, the person who gets the slice with the coin will have good luck in the new year.  Hoping to get the piece with the coin, Sophia and Emmet exploded with excitement—How convenient that the coin was between their two pieces. I love it!

Depending on the region of Greece, the vasilopita is a cake, a bread (tsoureki), or a pie.

Check the links below to read about the origin of the vasilopita and the recipe I used this year—Happy and healthy 2023.
