July flew by filled with a whirlwind of activities. Beginning with the 4th of July celebrations, golf competitions, Greek festivals, and volunteering.
My husband and I continued our tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July by attending our town’s parade. We look forward to seeing the various displays of red, white, and blue. Homes are adorned by bunting of our flag colors. Flags of various sizes are sprinkled on lawns and gardens and of course the people have their on style of wearing the red white and blue. Every year my go to is an all-sequence baseball hat of our flag coordinated with an appropriate outfit.
The excitement of the crowds along the parade route is high as the parade of area fire trucks, police vehicles, antique cars, antique bicycles, marching bands, steel drum bands, and floats by local organizations circle their way through town. After the parade, a round of golf, a cookout, and a fabulous display of fireworks closes our celebration.
Golf events abound in July. Member-guest, member-member, championships, fund raisers, and women’s invitationals are in full swing. Each event has its own unique theme and challenges. But all of them in addition to completion, offer the opportunity to connect with fellow golfers at area golf courses.
Luckily, between all the golf tournaments I found time to continue another summer tradition-Greek Festivals. What can I say about the Greek festivals? It’s an opportunity for non-Greeks to experience Greek culture. Whether it’s the cuisine, music, entertainment, and of course the dancing. During the two-day festival that our church, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Ipswich, MA held I was happy to offer my services by setting up and selling tickets at the entrance. In preparation for our festival a group of us made stuffed grape leaves, and spanakopites (spinach pies). Although it is rewarding to volunteer for the festival the best part for me is seeing friends and acquaintances, and dancing. The Greek Church of Newburyport, MA held their festival during Yankee Home Coming Days. Another opportunity for Greek food and dancing. Once again seeing friends sharing a meal and the dance floor.

Another rewarding personal activity was my volunteering for CareDimensions a Hospice and palliative care organization. I am grateful I was able to keep my commitment to a weekly patient visit.
So, as I wrapped up July, I can say it was a month of a beautiful combination of traditions, golf, and community.
